Welcome to: A Book or Two: Children's Literature Reviews, a blog site that offers information on new, classic, and favorite children's literature, reviewed by university professors, classroom teachers, librarians, and those studying to become teachers. We hope you will find "just the right book" to share with others. Our goal is to keep the site updated with information about children's authors, book awards, and new releases. Each entry will include the book cover picture, a brief overview, bibliographic information, and suggested uses for families, librarians, and teachers. We will categorize books in several different ways, to facilitate searching.

Grace for President

Author: Kelly DiPucchio
Illustrator: LeUyen Pham
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Publication Date: 2008
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Reading Level: 4th-5th Grade
Brief Overview: This story uses the plot of a class election to teach readers about the United States Electoral College. The book does a great job at representing cultural diversity and encourages female readers (and other readers from minority groups) to become more involved in the political movement. The author and illustrator used realistic pictures and various font styles and sizes to enhance the story. The last page of the book explains the Electoral College in detail and how it came about in the United States.
Integrated Activity: After explaining the process of the Electoral College, the teacher will ask students to discuss as a whole group why the Electoral College is important in the United States. Students will then write a paragraph about why it is important to vote in a government that uses the Electoral College system.
