Brief Overview: This Caldecott Honor Book tells the story of how a clever inchworm escapes imminent death by measuring all sorts of things; such as beaks, tail feathers, necks, legs, and a song. The inchworm cleverly escapes by inching out of sight during the nightingale’s song. The vibrantly colored, cut-out illustrations enhance the text by adding detail to the simple story.
Integrated Activity: Students will measure various objects throughout the classroom using rulers. Students will record their measurements in inches and write an informative text about the process of measuring an object using a ruler and use their measurements as examples. Students will also illustrate their writing by drawing small enough objects to scale on the backs of their papers; for example, erasers, pencils, post it notes, paper clips, etc.
