Book Description: A baby otter gets separated from his mother during a storm. The baby otter is rescued and taken to an aquarium. At the aquarium he learns to do all the things that his mother would have taught him in the wild. Once he is old enough the aquarium releases the otter back into the wild. This book has a lot of great illustrations. I like the way the author describes what happened to the otter in a realistic way but also keeps the flow of the story going. This book is a great way to introduce children to wildlife rescue.
Integrated Activity: (3rd grade) I want to use this book to introduce wildlife rescue. My class could research about wildlife rescue and how aquariums rehabilitate animals. Students can also research about endangered species and why it is important to protect wildlife. I would like to take my class on a field trip to a real aquarium that rehabilitates and protects wildlife. At the end of the unit students will be responsible for a group presentation (3 people per group) of their research. Students can create a poster or a PowerPoint presentation.
