Welcome to: A Book or Two: Children's Literature Reviews, a blog site that offers information on new, classic, and favorite children's literature, reviewed by university professors, classroom teachers, librarians, and those studying to become teachers. We hope you will find "just the right book" to share with others. Our goal is to keep the site updated with information about children's authors, book awards, and new releases. Each entry will include the book cover picture, a brief overview, bibliographic information, and suggested uses for families, librarians, and teachers. We will categorize books in several different ways, to facilitate searching.

Henry's Freedom Box

Author: Ellen Levine              Illustrator: Kadir Nelson
Copyright: 2007       Genre: Cultural fiction      Reading Level: 4-8 yrs
Book Description: This is the story of a boy who experienced most of his life in slavery. He eventually finds a clever way to escape and begins his life of freedom. They call it his birthday of freedom. I think this story is inspiring and I like how Henry never lost his courage.
Integrated Activity: (4th grade) After reading the story students will be make a box out of construction paper. We will write words on slips of paper that describe Henry (from the story). On the back of each word paper slip students will write a sentence about the word (how it describes Henry or why it is inspiring to them). These will be our class Freedom boxes to remind us of the struggles that other people experience and to give us words of encouragement when we need it.
